Aircraft parking in Sri Lanka needs to be planned around the aircraft, the length of stay and the intended departure. An airport suitable for a quick turnaround may not offer the parking arrangement needed for an overnight stay, a crew change or a longer visit. Landing approval and a handling confirmation should not be treated as confirmation of an unrestricted parking period.
This guide helps flight departments and dispatchers prepare a parking request for private, charter and other non-scheduled operations arriving from the Middle East or Asia. It focuses on the stay between arrival and departure; use the Sri Lanka airport guides for airport-specific context.
Choose the airport around the whole movement
Start with the passenger destination and the aircraft’s operational requirements. Compare Colombo Bandaranaike, Ratmalana, Mattala and Jaffna where relevant, rather than selecting a gateway only by distance to a hotel. The operator must assess performance, published restrictions and the intended operation. The local team then checks the proposed parking and handling arrangements.
For a Gulf-based aircraft staying while passengers visit Colombo, an apparently convenient arrival can become difficult if the departure time changes or the requested ground equipment is unavailable. An India or Southeast Asia rotation may instead need only a short overnight stay with an early departure. Give the coordinator both scenarios when they are realistic possibilities.
What to include in an aircraft parking request
- Aircraft type, registration, maximum take-off weight and any relevant dimensions.
- Arrival and departure dates and UTC times, including the expected parking duration.
- Operator details, flight purpose and whether passengers or crew will remain locally.
- Ground power, towing, stairs, servicing and aircraft-access requirements.
- Fuel uplift plans and any intended maintenance or inspections during the stay.
- Alternative departure timing and a contact authorised to approve changes.
Confirm the arrangement in writing
Ask what has been accepted, for which period, and what conditions apply. Where a stand assignment is made later, establish how confirmation will be communicated. Check whether repositioning or towing could be required and how the aircraft will remain accessible. Do not assume a confirmed apron stay includes hangar accommodation, maintenance support or unrestricted crew access.
Discuss aircraft ground handling separately from the parking allocation. Equipment compatibility, attendance, aircraft servicing and the timing of each task should be clear before the crew leaves the airport.
Build a complete cost picture
Request an itemised quotation showing airport parking, handling, ground equipment and any additional services. Ask which charges depend on weight, elapsed time, attendance or changes to the planned movement. Establish the settlement arrangements before departure. A longer stay can also affect crew accommodation and transport costs, so compare the whole operation rather than a single parking line.
Prepare the aircraft for departure
Set a reconfirmation point for the departure schedule, fuel uplift, permits, crew transport and passenger arrival. If passengers extend their visit, tell the coordinator before the original departure window. A hotel extension does not extend an airport parking confirmation.
For extended stays, agree how changes in airport restrictions or servicing needs will be reported. Inspection, storage and return-to-service tasks remain subject to the operator’s procedures and qualified personnel.
Frequently asked questions
Does landing permission include overnight parking?
Do not assume it does. Confirm the parking period and conditions separately with the airport and handling coordinator.
Can the parking stay be extended?
Request an extension as soon as the schedule changes. Acceptance and additional charges must be reconfirmed.
Is hangar parking guaranteed?
No. Treat hangar accommodation as a separate request requiring explicit availability and acceptance confirmation.
