Ratmalana VCCC vs Bandaranaike VCBI for Business Aviation

Aircraft refuelling at a Sri Lankan airport

Bandaranaike International Airport (VCBI/CMB) is usually the primary choice for international business aviation into Colombo, while Ratmalana (VCCC/RML) offers closer city access for suitable light and medium aircraft. The correct airport depends on runway requirements, operating time, CIQ, fuel, parking, ground equipment and the mission—not distance alone.

Last operational review: 13 September 2026. Confirm current eAIP data, NOTAMs, airport acceptance and service availability before every operation.

Choose VCBI when operational flexibility comes first

Bandaranaike International Airport is Sri Lanka’s principal international gateway. Its longer runway, H24 operations and wider service capability make it the natural first option for many international charter, corporate, cargo and other non-scheduled movements.

VCBI is generally better suited when the aircraft is large, the schedule falls outside daylight hours, the mission requires broad ground-support capability, or operational resilience matters more than road distance to central Colombo.

Choose VCCC when city access and aircraft suitability align

Colombo International Airport Ratmalana is geographically closer to central Colombo. That can reduce surface travel for meetings and city-based itineraries, but the advantage matters only when the aircraft, operating time and required services fit VCCC’s published limitations.

Ratmalana should be evaluated carefully for runway performance, aircraft weight, operating hours, CIQ arrangements, parking, fuel and ground equipment. A shorter drive does not compensate for an unsuitable runway or an unconfirmed service.

1. Compare runway and aircraft performance

VCBI’s 3,350 × 45 m runway supports a much broader aircraft range than VCCC’s 1,400 × 30 m runway. Operators considering Ratmalana must complete their own performance assessment using aircraft configuration, landing weight, departure weight, temperature, wind, runway condition, obstacles and regulatory margins.

Do not select VCCC solely from a generic aircraft-category label such as “light jet” or “midsize jet.” Two aircraft in the same market category can have different runway and pavement requirements. Airport acceptance and the operator’s performance calculation are both essential.

2. Compare operating hours and schedule resilience

VCBI operates H24, which generally offers greater flexibility for late arrivals, overnight departures, recovery from delays and connections to long-haul schedules.

VCCC airport services are primarily published for daylight operations. A movement close to the edge of the available window needs additional schedule protection. A departure delay at origin can affect airport acceptance, CIQ, handling, fuel and crew duty at Ratmalana.

If the itinerary is time-sensitive or likely to change, VCBI may provide the more resilient plan even when VCCC is closer to the city.

3. Compare access to Colombo

Ratmalana’s principal commercial advantage is proximity to central Colombo. For an eligible aircraft operating within the airport’s service window, it can be attractive for passengers travelling to city meetings or southern Colombo districts.

VCBI is north of Colombo and typically involves a longer surface transfer. Actual journey time varies significantly with traffic, time of day and final destination. Arrange transport using the operational schedule rather than a fixed distance estimate.

For passengers travelling outside central Colombo, the closest airport on a map may not provide the shortest total journey. Compare the final ground destination, road conditions and aircraft operating constraints together.

4. Compare customs, immigration and quarantine

VCBI is the country’s primary international gateway and routinely supports international passenger and crew processing. Non-scheduled operations must still coordinate the correct arrival formalities and provide manifests and General Declaration details within the required timeline.

At VCCC, international CIQ arrangements should be confirmed specifically for the flight. Provide passenger and crew numbers, nationalities, passport details, visa position and any special assistance request early.

5. Compare fuel availability

Jet A-1 is available at both airports, but the service profile differs. VCBI provides H24 fuel capability, while VCCC’s published fuel operation is aligned with daylight hours. Required quantity, stock, supplier acceptance, fuel release and delivery timing should always be confirmed.

If uplift is critical for the onward sector, build tolerance into the turnaround and obtain written confirmation before departure. Review the Sri Lanka Jet A-1 uplift checklist for the complete release and payment process.

6. Compare parking and ground support

Parking must be confirmed at either airport, particularly for overnight stays, peak periods and larger aircraft. Provide wingspan, length, MTOW and intended time on ground.

VCBI generally offers the broader equipment base. At VCCC, confirm aircraft-specific requirements such as passenger steps, GPU connection, towing head, lavatory service, potable water and baggage equipment before selecting the airport.

7. Compare permit, slot and PPR coordination

Private and non-scheduled flights generally require the applicable Sri Lankan landing approval. Airport acceptance, slot or PPR, parking and handling are connected but separate confirmations.

Send the intended airport, aircraft, schedule, purpose and passenger or cargo details accurately in the first request. If the airport changes from VCCC to VCBI—or the reverse—the permit, airport and service arrangements may all require revision.

Decision guide

  • Select VCBI for larger aircraft, H24 scheduling, wider support capability or maximum operational flexibility.
  • Consider VCCC for suitable light or medium aircraft when daylight timing and all required services can be confirmed.
  • Prefer VCBI when the schedule is likely to move outside VCCC’s service window.
  • Consider VCCC when reducing road travel to central Colombo materially benefits the mission.
  • Reassess both when parking, specialist equipment, fuel quantity or CIQ requirements are unusual.

Information SEAS needs to compare the airports

  • Aircraft type, registration, MTOW and wingspan
  • Estimated landing and take-off weights
  • Inbound and outbound routing
  • UTC arrival and departure times
  • Purpose and flight category
  • Crew and passenger numbers
  • Final ground destination in Colombo
  • Parking duration
  • Fuel grade and estimated uplift
  • Ground-support equipment requirements
  • CIQ and special-assistance requirements
  • Tolerance for schedule changes

Frequently asked questions

Which airport is closest to central Colombo?

Ratmalana VCCC is closer to central Colombo. It is only the better choice when the aircraft, operating window and required services are suitable and confirmed.

Which airport is better for a large business jet?

VCBI is generally the appropriate first option because of its longer runway and broader operating capability. Final suitability must be confirmed for the aircraft and mission.

Can an international private flight use Ratmalana?

Eligible international private or non-scheduled movements may use VCCC when airport acceptance, aircraft suitability, permits, CIQ, parking, handling and fuel are confirmed in advance.

Is Jet A-1 available at both airports?

Jet A-1 is available at both, but VCBI has H24 capability while VCCC’s published fuel service is primarily daylight-based. Confirm every uplift with the supplier.
